The first movement, On the Threshold, is a time of preparation where we learn to quiet and center ourselves. As we enter the labyrinth, we sometimes say a prayer, ask a question of ourselves, or acknowledge a word or mantra that will help us focus on the journey ahead.
The second movement, Journeying In, is the act of walking the path to our center, or the center of the labyrinth. While on this part of our spiritual journey, we find that the labyrinth reflects of our daily life. As we journey inwards we free the mind. Emotions and thoughts flow freely. We walk our path, one step at a time, each following our own pace, each living our own experience.
The third movement, The Resting Place, is where we reach the center of the labyrinth and stop to rest, opening ourselves to new possibilities and beginnings. We are now receptive to the insights and new awareness that surround us.
The fourth movement, Journeying out, allows us to return to our daily life renewed and inspired, remembering the gifts of our new insights and awareness. We give thanks to life for the gift of the journey.
Using the labyrinth and its four movements for meditation and contemplation can be a powerful and profound tool for transformation. While we can’t “walk” the labyrinth depicted in these art pieces, we can walk the path with our minds, or even by tracing the path with our fingers. Or we can simply meditate in the serene beauty of the labyrinth, mindful of our inner journey.
